Northern Summer School
The Institute of Psychoanalysis and Opera North come together to present an introduction to key concepts in psychoanalysis in a two-day Summer School at the Howard Assembly Rooms, Grand Theatre, Leeds.
This exciting collaboration with one of Europe’s leading arts organisations aims to make psychoanalytic ideas accessible to a wider public. It will bring them to life by exploring the shared territories between psychoanalysis, opera and other performing arts, with their shared aim of telling a story with emotional intensity and meaning, which has the potential to transform. It will demystify psychoanalysis and expand awareness of its role in contemporary society and its contribution to the understanding of the impact and importance of the cultural domain.
Over the two days, there will be lectures on psychoanalysis as a body of knowledge, psychoanalytic interpretation, what a psychoanalyst is and what the training involves, as well as sessions considering psychoanalysis and film, performing violence and translating story to stage.
The event will give participants a unique opportunity to meet practising psychoanalysts and to take part in a dialogue between performers, directors and psychoanalysts to explore the synergy between the two disciplines.
Summer School is for all interested parties, including current undergraduate and postgraduate students from any discipline or background.
Our contributors include David Bell, Don Campbell, Julia Fabricius, Susie Godsil, Veronica Gore, Ken Robinson, Orpha Phelan, Daniel Norman and Andrea Sabbadini.
